Scripture: Ruth 1:16-18 NLT

“But Ruth replied, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I allow anything but death to separate us!” When Naomi saw that Ruth was determined to go with her, she said nothing more.” - ‭Ruth‬ ‭1:16-18‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Now take a moment to reflect on the passage that you just read. Was there anything that stuck out to you?

In this chapter Naomi has to move back to her home because she has lost her husband and all of her sons; all that she has left is her two daughters-in-law. Naomi instructs each of these women to go back to their homes so that they may be remarried. But, Ruth refuses to leave Naomi’s side. Imagine walking through life as one person, but then because of love and loyalty you pick up and change everything. Everything can change when you put your faith in something greater than yourself. Ruth had the opportunity to turn back and go to something familiar and comfortable, but instead she accepted the call to be loyal and caring. This relationship is a great example of God’s love working in people’s lives. These women did not have to care for each other, they are not related by blood; but because of their faith and devotion they stick together and choose to remain family.

While I was reading Ruth I was struck by her faith and devotion; I can’t really imagine having trust like this. But this is what God is calling us to do isn't it? We should be trusting and willing to take giant leaps of faith. Ruth was not afraid because of her faith. Imagine if we could all be brave in the same way that Ruth was.

So I am challenging everyone to be brave and courageous as we start a new semester take a leap, follow your dreams, and don’t be afraid to change things up. Make connections and build christ-centered relationships; you can choose who your family is. Just go out and love people unconditionally because that is how God loves you.
